Our vision is to create a more resilient and sustainable global society through a better understanding of risk. With every breakthrough and new idea, we get closer to making this a worldwide reality. From AI and machine learning to leading edge modeling and software development, we are focused on transforming catastrophe risk and building global opportunities.

In a culture built on trust and empowerment, every RMS employee is challenged to bring bold thinking and new ideas to the table. The work we do is advancing the risk management industry and helping to make the world more resilient. The challenge is immense and meaningful, which is why the best and brightest choose RMS

Risk Management Solutions (RMS) is the world's leading provider of mathematical models and information related to the financial impact of natural catastrophes. Our Model Development department has over fifty Ph.D. scientists and engineers, building mathematical models that predict the distributions of possible damage due to the effects of tropical storms, extra-tropical storms, thunderstorms, storm-surges, and freshwater floods. To that effect, we use observational and reanalysis data, as well as numerical, statistical, data science, and engineering models.

We are the pioneers in the development and application of cutting-edge, combined statistical and numerical modelling methods for the quantification of natural hazard risk, and our models are the most detailed and comprehensive models of natural catastrophes produced anywhere in the world.

Our clients include several hundred insurance and reinsurance companies as well as brokers, banks, hedge funds, regional and local governments, and multilateral agencies.

Objective of the Role

RMS has an open position in our HWind team based in Tallahassee, FL. The role involves utilizing observations and numerical weather prediction data to analyze/predict the past, present, and future of tropical cyclone wind fields and their resulting losses. It presents a unique opportunity to work in a team of meteorologists and catastrophe modelers to deliver time-sensitive tropical cyclone data to our clients.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary duty of this role is to contribute toward the development, support, and delivery of HWind products. These HWind products include both probabilistic forecasts and observationally-based wind field analyses. Tasks assigned to this position will include upgrading, maintaining, and automating internal software. Meteorological and/or technical support for our real-time hurricane operations will be required. The role will also include responsibilities related to advancing RMS's response to ongoing tropical cyclones in the Atlantic or Pacific basins through multidisciplinary research and development. The successful candidate will work most closely with the Tallahassee HWind team, but there will be significant crossover with the RMS Event Response and Model Development teams based in London. The role will also provide the opportunity to work with client-facing colleagues to communicate scientific concepts to clients.

Essential Requirements:

The ideal candidate's qualities, skills and attributes follow:
  • PhD in a relevant subject (e.g. Meteorology, Oceanography, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or closely related areas). Holders of an MSc degree in the above relevant subjects, with appropriate work experience may also be considered.
  • Strong mathematical foundation with particular focus in numerical modeling, statistics, probability, machine learning, and/or computational science.
  • Experience, research, and/or interest in weather forecasting, particularly of tropical cyclones and their resulting hazards
  • Experience working with meteorological data in common formats such as netCDF and delimited text files.
  • Strong computer programming skills, (experience with Python is preferred), and understanding modern systems of scientific repeatability and engineering scalability (e.g., GitHub).
  • Capability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress operational setting.
  • Experience in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Ability to communicate analysis results and insights effectively both internally and with external business partners.
Advantageous:
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL databases
  • Demonstrated success to manage evolving priorities and deadlines and to make quick and precise decisions in a time-sensitive situation.
  • Excellent time management and planning skills with a commitment to delivery.
  • Driven and committed, demonstrating initiative and self-motivation.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and intense curiosity.
  • Familiarity and interest in the re/insurance business domain.
Please provide your CV highlighting the salient education and experience, and a Cover Letter demonstrating how these meet the requirements of the position.
